Volume 1, Number 1—Spring 2001
Book In Brief:
The Scientist in the Crib: What Early Learning Tells Us About the Mind.— Alison Gopnik, Ph.D., Andrew N. Meltzkoff, Ph.D., and Patricia K. Kuhl, Ph.D.

This is an absolutely terrific, eye-opening book about the ways kids really learn and grow and develop. There isn't one page that does not contain an astonishing surprise for a parent. Those so-called "blank slates" that are supposedly children are simply anything but. Gopnik, Melzkoff, and Kuhl write lucidly, brilliantly, and with impressive sweep and subtlety. Now, I wouldn't want to say that parents planning pregnancy might consider putting off the big moment until they finish the book, but, you know, it wouldn't hurt, either.
